Asha Deep (August Update)

In the month of August an average number of 142 children visited the Shelter and an average of 88 children visited the slum school. Those of our children enrolled in Schools have answered their First term exams well and have received a fairly good result. Non – formal & formal classes were held regularly at the shelter. The four Slum Schools were successfully conducted despite the heavy rains. The children were picked from the slums at around 10:00 a.m. after which they were brought to the Shelter and provided non-formal education and and after luch they were dropped back to their homes by 1:00 p.m. The children received non-formal education at the Shelter and after lunch were dropped home. Dadima visited the newly started slum school at Camara Bhatt and taught the children some basic education. She also assisted regularly at the Shelter and in teaching the children.                                                    
Vijesh, Amit & Yvonne attended the two day ‘Community Health Workers Training’ held at House of Norma. The training programme was organised by Glory, In-charge, House of Norma.
Deepti from Stepping Stones assisted us regularly with fundraising activities and networking.
Mock fire drill was conducted at the Shelter and around 74 children, 6 staff, 1 assistant teacher and 1 volunteer participated in the drill.

Volunteer Nikita Benson joined us on 3rd August. She assisted the staff at the Shelter and field workers at the slum schools in teaching basic & non-formal education for the children. Volunteer Lisanne joined us on 23rd of August and assisted us with the Shelter activities.   
Volunteers Andrea and Karuna visited the Shelter at regular intervals and interacted with the children and helped them with their studies.

The Shelter celebrated India’s Independence Day on 15th August. Around 130 children attended the event. Children received special lunch sponsored by the Rotary club team members. Soon after the lunch a rally was organised from Shelter to Miramar Beach, which the staff and children waving flags and shouting slogans. After reaching the spot the children were provided sweets, cake & soft drinks. The cake was sponsored by the Daily Bread Family. After serving the refreshments, the children enacted a small enlightening skit. The programme ended by 5.30 p.m. and the children reached home safely.
