in

Glory, the Incharge of the House of Norma (Children’s Hospice) conducted a 2 days training programme for our Shelter field workers and two newly recruited Community heath workers. Glory discussed the causes, symptoms & treatment of various communicable diseases such as, Influenza, Diarrhoea – Dysentery, Tuberculosis etc. and other diseases like malaria, cholera etc. Emphasis was also laid on sexually transmitted diseases like HIV infection. She stressed upon the importance of hygiene as the various precautionary measure in order to prevent illnesses. The need to recognise a disease is also a crucial factor. A focus on Environmental sanitation was also placed.

Care and medical advices should be given to people in order to prevent such diseases. Glory explained that the most important thing for a Health / Field worker is to gain the trust of the people and mainly to listen to their issues before giving any opinion. A simple language plays an important role as common people can easily understand. The field worker also needs to ask additional questions to clarify doubts. A field worker has to learn to recognize a person who is not well and whether he/she can be treated at home or needs a doctor. She also emphasised on issues like Promotion of Birth control for women and awareness on Antenatal, pre-natal and post natal care. Children should be given the full course of vaccination, most of which are provided free by the Government.
The slums are the main focus areas where our field workers can spread health education among the people. The need to educate the slum dwellers is huge as through teaching them we can eradicate many problems.
