From Streets to Safety….

In a world that is turning apathetic to the plight of the poor, the most desperate are the children of sex workers. One such case is that of Ruksar and her children.
Forced into prostitution by the circumstances, Ruksar took to alcoholism to dull the pain of her pathetic daily existence, leaving her three small children to fend for themselves. Tasleema, the eldest of the three used to beg in the streets and feed her siblings with the meager collections she made.

Tasleema and her younger brother Afshan used to visit our Stepping Stones shelter in Margao regularly during the day to have lunch. At night they would go to bed almost on an empty stomach as nobody would help them. Recently we came to know that Ruksar has been admitted to a hospital for Tuberculosis. As soon as we came to know of the children’s desperate condition, we took them into the shelter as Night Shelter children. Sadly, the 9 month old Safia is also infected by the dreadful disease.

All the three children have now been moved into our Hospice – “The House of Norma” where the children are cared for and the youngest is undergoing proper treatment and medication. As soon as they recover they will be moved to the appropriate El Shaddai-run Homes and be enrolled into the Shanti Niketan School.

Our fieldworkers also regularly visit the mother in the hospital to ensure that she is undergoing proper treatment. She enjoys talking about her children and trusts El Shaddai to provide them with a bright future.
