An average of 98 children visited the Shelter per day during the month of July. Around 9 children received non-formal education and 10 children received formal education during the morning session. While 96 school-going children received tuitions during the afternoon session. The children especially the Non-formal class children are doing well in their studies. The School children are busy preparing for their 1st term examination.
Vijesh joined as the Shelter In-charge of Asha Deep during the month. Yvonne provided him with the necessary information which helped him to update himself. Yvonne & Vijesh attended the In-charge’s meeting held on 16th July held at Shanti Niketan. After which a training was organised for the In-charges which focused on Effective communication, the training was conducted by Siddhi, the HR Executive. Our Dadima regularly visited and assisted us with the Shelter activities and also took the children out to play. Dadima also went to the slum school with a field worker and taught basic education to the children.
Our field workers regularly visited different slum areas and interacted with the children and their parents and spoke to them about El Shaddai and encouraged them to send their children to us and benefit from our Shelter. During the month two new Slum Schools have been started, one at Taleigao with 34 children receiving formal tuitions and one at Campal with 19 children receiving non-formal education. Stanly, Deepti, Laxman and Nitin from Stepping Stones visited the Shelter and assisted with the Shelter & Slum School activities. They also helped in putting things in order at the Shelter. They brought Arti and Julius to do wall paintings, the art work made the Shelter look pleasing to the eyes. Various fundraising activities and networking were also carried out during the month with the help of Deepti. Amit and Deepti visited slum sites at Betim, Merces and Chimbel. We are Likely to start slum schools at Merces, Peter Bhat at St.Inez and Betim. Since families have gone to their native villages due to the monsoons, the Betim slum school has stopped.
Karuna has been doing voluntary work with us twice a week during the month. She helped and assisted in the Shelter activities and also spent time interacting with the children. Andrea Rodrigues has started her internship on field work. She will be voluntarily assisting us every Thursday and Friday until March 2011. Four Volunteers, Kiresh, Tharinda, Sonam and Nina from UK volunteered at the Shelter for about a week. They visited the slum school and spent time interacting with the children and teaching them basic education.
Around Seven children were treated for viral fever at primary health centre, Panaji. Three children were taken to GMC hospital for various health problems. We are thankful towards all our sponsors and donors who have contributed towards the Shelter in various ways.
